He lost it on the new management and said his mind.

Sorry he's gone, but good for him standing up.

3.2k

u/MentalSky_ 2h ago

the new management makes accusations about his conduct like he is a new hire that crossed the line.

The dude was a monument at CBS

1.5k

u/Helenium_autumnale 2h ago

This is one of those events that reflects poorly on the person doing it, not the victim. Respect to Scott Pelley and best of luck with his next endeavor.

508

u/Mcmunn 2h ago

They needed him more than he needed them…

105

u/Bobby837 1h ago

Only they didn't know what to do with him, aside firing.

Weren't going to get him to tow their line, promote their narratives, so him leaving was just a matter time.

77

u/OfferMeds 1h ago

*toe. Toe the line.

35

u/WretchedBlowhard 1h ago

That line keeps moving all over the place, someone's gotta be towing it.

CBS doesn't care. They axed The Late Show with Stephen Colbert over "ratings." There's no doubt also a political motive to getting rid of 60 Minutes, too. Trump was really pissed over an episode of that show and the new owner of CBS seems dedicated to pleasing our new king. Fuck CBS. I'm hopping over to Youtube and watching the Australian "60 Minutes" instead. CBS can go piss themselves for all I care.

116

u/SouthboundPachyderm- 2h ago

Don't bother with Aussie 60 minutes.

Four Corners is the real Aussie investigative journalism show. Maybe 7:30 report too

35

u/Zebidee 1h ago

Also, for an eye-opener, see the Australian show 'Mediawatch' which calls out media bullshit, even in its own, state owned channel.

Ratings show he was constantly 2-3 in the rankings and 1-2 in certain demographics. Which is hilarious to say his rating dipped. CBS is trash

u/Hesitation-Marx 1h ago

Bari Weiss was installed to make it so. Fucking piece of shit.

I find it amazing that Trump was able to get support of the people who were thrown into the camps and also the people who would have ran them.

7

Yep.

I don’t have any good words to say about Bari Weiss.

Always follow the money. These idiots see $$$ with Trump and don't realize once he's gone they'll have nothing left. It's not the 80s anymore.

8

u/tellmewhenimlying 1h ago

Nah… they’ll have plenty of money left, just slightly less influence and access to the people in power, but still plenty of and too much influence and access.

I think that was the administration's goal. According to Pelley "they're murdering 60 minutes."

60 minutes is dead to me anyway now. It had a great run.

84

u/redacted_robot 2h ago

The whole staff could just move to ABC or somewhere else and make "43 Minutes + Sponsors"

42

That would be quite awesome to see! The ultimate payback!

Reminds me of The Insider when Mike Wallace lambasts CBS corporate for sticking their nose in News.

My, have times have changed.

10

Bruce McGill - one of those actors everyone recognizes but few know the name - has a spectacular scene in that film.

Great Michael Mann film. He was on a roll in the 90s with that, Last of the Mohicans and Heat.

I'm of the opinion that the veterans of CBS News and 60 minutes should have walked out when Bari Weiss spiked the El Salvador episode.

Why would you stay after that? To be a doormat?

Leave on your terms, when you clearly have the means. But I'm glad the damn is breaking it seems.

171

u/SovietShooter 2h ago

I would imagine there was a sense of duty; 60 Minutes is the pinnacle of the journalism business, and I imagine these folks have a sense of pride. They aren't going to quit, CBS is going to have to fire them.

Also, keep in mind for context, that they'd already fired Alfonsi and Vega shortly before this meeting took place, so Pelley was not only speaking his mind, but defending the integrity of his coworkers.

25

u/_MrDomino 2h ago

This and you would still look to affect some kind of change if possible, though it was going to be difficult as management and ownership have all the power. I'd argue it's also better to not have walked in response all at once -- it looks less like a tantrum response and keeps the upheaval by Weiss in the news longer.

u/Coldkiller17 2h ago

It's my problem with all the "reputable" news stations they started throwing away actually reporting the news to appease a narcissistic child rapist who kept blackmailing them to steal more money instead of fighting back and destroying him. Their credibility is gone I stopped watching 60 minutes after they pulled that segment it was insane they even pulled that shit.

I'm betting his contract was written up by a highly competent lawyer... this is probably going to have repercussions for CBS.

26

u/Mode_Select 2h ago

At the very least sue and make them go to trial just to completely blow management apart. Make it public, force their hand

→ More replies (1)

218

u/unfinishedtoast3 2h ago

Not likely at all.

Standard media contracts have non-disparagement clauses in them for tv personalities.

He knew what the risk was and likely doesn't care. Good on him for standing up

234

u/BFH 2h ago

He didn't disparage them in public though. Someone else was recording.

32

u/jasdonle 2h ago

I hadn't heard there was a recording. The reports were all second hand from people present.

20

u/lordunholy 2h ago

I'd love to hear it cut right through that putz when he said it.

12

u/cha-cha_dancer 2h ago

The meeting that led to the blowup was recorded per NBC but the follow up with Pelley and Bilton I think was private.

When Musk keeps talking about the "woke mind virus" it's, again, projection. It doesn't take brainwashing from a media propaganda bubble to become "woke", it just requires observation and empathy.

Bari Weiss continues on her mission of tanking CBS.

923

u/PetriDishCocktail 2h ago

Exactly, she's doing exactly what she was hired to do.

345

u/pilemaker 2h ago

Right? I learned today Paramount paid her $150m to do this, I guess.

196

u/Coool_cool_cool_cool 2h ago

Paramount is so stupid. Everything is so stupid. We're watching the pillaging of the American people and "journalist" being paid off to make sure it doesn't get reported on.

83

u/elykl12 2h ago

It's not them stepping on rakes. They didnt hire Weiss to turn a profit. Trump's allies hired Weiss to burn CBS to the fucking ground.

They are getting returns on their investment.

12

u/Ja3k_Frost 1h ago

It’s actually a lot less trump in this case than bari Weiss. Shes a grade a grifter who found her place as the (personably) charismatic cosmopolitan woman who tells rich techno-fascists exactly what they want to hear.

She worked at the NYT for a while as their token conservative voice. She tried to get herself fired more or less in solidarity with the guys out there getting canceled in the me too movement as her entrance to conservative media but they just never fired her, so she had to submit a lukewarm resignation.

Shes mostly made her career off being a “feminist who thinks the left has gone too far” and mostly wrote articles in favor of various figures who got canceled.

I’m sure how you can see how this appeals to wealthy men who run companies. So naturally they support her running all the media. She’s just dumber goebbels.

37

u/DataCassette 2h ago

Isn't the entire Paramount operation saddled with crushing, borderline comical amounts of debt at this point?

35

u/CirnoWhiterock 2h ago

Yes, but like with Musk's purchase of twitter the money is not what they care about, its about controlling the message.

14

u/Paulpoleon 2h ago

Controlling the message will make them far more money on other things than they lose on purchasing the media

Just preventing Bernie Sanders or another progressive from becoming president and instituting thier tax plan saves people like Musk literally tens of Billions.

Depends on what his contract said. Someone at his level should get some decent F-off money. But his contract could also have a non-compete window, so he might be untouchable for another news outlet. You'd assume he would write a book, but once again depending on the contract, it might have to be about something other than his tenure at CBS News.

Now it’s just not the same and it’s tragic, but it’s also completely predictable when you have a right wing billionaire who wants to N 60 minutes because that will help them consolidate more power in their hands. Fuck them.

In all my decades, CBS & PBS were the only mainstream news that I paid any attention to.

Fuck CBS, Weiss, Ellison, and every other piece of shit that ruined this storied network!

u/UglyPineapple 2h ago

This was the plan all along from CBS. Scott knew he was gone once Bari took over, he went down fighting and exposing the incompetence of her leadership.

u/Backpacker7385 2h ago

You couldn’t pay me to tune into CBS at this point. Fuck them and their kowtowing to the crown.

Glad he spoke out against the husk that CBS News is now. Fuck MAGA.

u/CantAffordzUsername 2h ago

I loved 60 minutes but CBS executives destroyed it, fk them. Sad seeing him leave, but at least he’s standing up for what he believes

11

u/dethmetlbrah 2h ago

This is what was going to happen, CBS was intentionally bought by Weiss to be ruined like Twitter with Musk

u/LoadsDroppin 2h ago

Replaced by Special Correspondent, Joseph Rogan

u/HardcorePhonography 2h ago

They should all quit and go work for Stephen Colbert, who will produce "60-ish Minutes".

I had actually been pretty settled on CBS News as a tolerable, trusted news source for a couple years before this takeover. Now, app is deleted and I avoid clicking on their links.

bari weiss is a propagandist traitor to the american people. we won't forget.

22

u/iBizzBee 2h ago

CBS, and a ton of "mainstream" media are now MAGA Pravda.

7

u/tmorg5 2h ago

Wasn’t so long ago I wouldn’t have believed that CBS could even die. But it’s dead

7

u/djm19 2h ago

I think he obviously knew the writing was on the wall. Good on him for speaking truth to power.

7

u/aliamokeee 2h ago

Do correspondents get unemployment?

Id love to be a fly on the wall of that unemployment hearing.

Fuck CBS

As he noted, they are there to destroy the program and this firing is evidence of that.

I'm shocked!
Nope I'm not. Good for him for standing up and speaking truth.

Remember when CBS News was a respected journalistic enterprise?

7

u/Plenty_of_prepotente 2h ago

5 minutes ago I read an article reporting that Nick Bilton said he would not be intimidated by Scott Pelley. I thought to myself, "100% Scott Pelley is fired," because the right wing is not only very insecure and unable to tolerate dissent, but they also always say the opposite of what they mean.

u/snapchillnocomment 2h ago

Far be it for me to shed a tear for any mainstream media outlet, but it's kinda sad seeing an institution lines CBS dismantled so quickly, all in service of a Zionist billionaire's whims.

6

u/RoarOfTheWorlds 2h ago

He should go at it Price is Right style and join a new network to host a show called 59 minutes

5

u/IngsocInnerParty 2h ago

The rest of 60 Minutes should resign tonight if they have any integrity.

5

u/Silly-Resist8306 2h ago

I have watched 60 minutes nearly every Sunday for more than 50 years, all the way back to the days of Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner. I won't be watching another one.

Cancel your Paramount+ subscription, mateys.

6

u/mcmatu 2h ago

He and those gone from 60 Minutes should start their own YouTube Channel. I’m sure they’d get enough subscribers and Patreons to do great work.

5

u/bigfanofyourmom 2h ago

CNN or MSNOW should come out w a 60 minutes replacement called One Hour

Bari Weiss and the hack she hired to run 60 Minutes just trashed someone who gave 40 years to the program. Pelley saw the writing on the wall, and he knew that Weiss was going gut 60 Minutes and turn it into a MAGA magazine that trades on the reputation built in large part by Pelley. 60 Minutes is dead even if they continue producing content under that name. Bari Weiss pulled out her dick and pissed all over it. Whatever uses the 60 Minutes label from now on is garbage that intends to soft-sell MAGA ideology to an audience who thinks they're watching a program they've come to know and trust. Fuck Bari Weiss and her new lapdog. I hope the failure that 60 Minutes becomes hangs like an albatross around her neck.

11

u/MandoDoughMan 2h ago

Clown organization. He's going to have his choice of network.

14

u/PatchyWhiskers 2h ago

Nope. They are all getting co-opted by MAGA billionaires to control our minds.

14

u/yupgup12 2h ago

No one takes CBS news seriously anymore anyways.

Scott Pelley is about to get a new job. Don’t know quite where, but I’m sure it will pay well.
