New God Of War game focused on Laufey (Faye) announced during the June 2nd PlayStation State of play
20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay accompanied the announcement. Looks like you play as her after death - You also have help from animal companions here and there.

If it's an afterlife for gods, no doubt there'll be an appearance from some of the Greek gods Kratos had run ins with, which will be fun
497
u/ShitImBadAtThis 6h ago
I didn't even think about this, that's a great point. Not to mention the dead Norse gods. Maybe even Odin??
301
u/Coryocalypse 5h ago
Depends on how time flows in this afterlife. Looks like it starts as soon as Kratos lights the pyre that cremates her
143
u/Neilo_D 5h ago
True, depending on the time covered in the game, we could see Thor and Odin arrive. This game I think might also answer the mystery of the mask. I think there was a mention of masks in the trailer?
→ More replies (2)93
u/ShitImBadAtThis 5h ago
She absolutely mentions masks multiple times; you're totally right that that's a likely tie-in at some point
→ More replies (1)57
u/CallM3N3w 5h ago
And MULTIPLE masks. The plot thickens. Ngl, I expect Atreus to show up at the end as an adult if the flow of time is slower compared to the Norse Realms.

→ More replies (4)27
u/CallM3N3w 5h ago
Would be touching. Especially since she is upset she didn't get to say goodbye. It does seem her death was sudden, and despite the prophecy she didn't forsee her time of death.
→ More replies (4)10
u/ShitImBadAtThis 5h ago
Yeah completely agree; the flow of time here could absolutely be something different. For all we know, maybe it starts after we spread her ashes in Jotunheim? We'll have to wait and see
11
u/MMOier 5h ago
I think since they dubbed the place "Everywhen" it probably spans across all time in some fashion.

→ More replies (4)8
u/TheYellingMute 4h ago
Yeah I was about to say. Odins soul I thought was legit completely destroyed but it's been a minute.
Odin being alive(in the afterlife) would be scary with how manipulative he can be. He'd find a way to go back or even worse, have greater ambitions.

Personnal theory on this: This is the other side of the place that odin was looking through with the Mask that Atreus closed, which is why the big dude mentioned that the way was closed ( we don't 100% know that faye appeared there right after her death, it might have took time for her to get there )
10
u/Combat_Wombat23 Xbox 5h ago
I thought whatever was on the other side was the truth of creation? Or is that just what Odin thought I guess? The characters in the gameplay mention a mask and second mask a few times so I suppose it could add up
→ More replies (1)14
u/Abaddon-117 3h ago
That realm could be the truth of creation, but the crux of Odin’s desire was finding if there was an afterlife for gods. He thought it was unfair that mortals had things like Valhalla or Hel, while gods apparently didn’t. I think he said something like “there has to be something after”

u/MPM001 6h ago
Bet it was Faye who blew the horn in GoW 2018
301
u/MathematicianLife510 5h ago
Honestly I'll be shocked if it's not. If I remember rightly, Cory Barlog confirmed he already had plans to reveal who it was after Ragnarok and considering this is set during GoW 2018 it just makes more and more sense.
→ More replies (3)13
u/TransBrandi 3h ago
It's mentioned in the trailer that she's not fully in this realm of Everywhen. It could be that she's half here and half in Midgard allowing her to affect things in both places in some fashion.
→ More replies (3)106
u/VanitasTheBest 5h ago
Could be a good end point for the game. Like, she finds a way back but crossing over would mean she loses her place in the afterlife, essentially giving existence. Then she sees her son is sick and makes the ultimate sacrifice.
127
u/Korashy 4h ago
Kratos has escaped the afterlife like 3 times already.
You just climb real good and beat up anyone in your way.
→ More replies (4)47
u/Maui-youre-welcome 5h ago
Mm I don't think it would end there considering that's only like halfway through the first game. Plus there's the dreams connection she has with Kratos throughout the second with her giving him messages and such so doesn't fully make sense to end the game there.
13
5
u/TransBrandi 3h ago
It's also possible for this game to cover both previous games timeline wise. They seem to call this realm "Everywhen" which could mean timey whimey shenanigans.

I think that splinter that was stuck in Laufey’s hand was either from one of her trees, or from the Leviathan axe hilt and she was planning on using that to find her way back to Norse mythos. But then that Egyptian looking green god destroyed it, and then that huge cube tower gate was “closed”.
So I think she’s definitely gonna make it back to Norse mythos by the endgame maybe, but she’ll end up back after Ragnarok and Valhalla ending.

Yeah to clarify, it is believed there's a few creative teams in Sony Santa Monica right now that spun off after GoW 2018
Barlog took a crew and began working on this Faye game while the bulk of the studio made Ragnarok under a different Director (Eric Williams) and it is assumed Eric is now working with a creative team on the Atreus game
Then you have the crew working on the trilogy remake as well. Lot of God of War happening rn lol

it’s from a tweet that read:

it’s basically making fun of people who try to analyze media, while not having nearly enough knowledge to note anything useful so it ends up being really absurd and/or shallow.

I mean, they aren't wrong. This scene with them rounding up all of these creatures and putting them in cages definitely feels somewhat reminiscent of the scene in Shrek where they are rounding up all of the fairy tale creatures.
Also "Frank's" name is spelled Phranque (apparently) which seems similiar to Farquaad if you squint a bit. lol
Other than that and maybe Phranque being a "comedy relief" like Donkey... there isn't much else I can see as "Shrek-coded." Even the Donkey part is a a stretch since a comedic relief character isn't a Shrek-specific thing.

This will be happening concurrently with the first god of war so you will likely be seeing the gods from those games popping up one by one as kratos kills them.
7
u/ShitImBadAtThis 5h ago edited 5h ago
Where did you hear it will be happening concurrently with the first god of war? Just because Fey wakes up then doesn't necessarily mean the flow of time works the same in this place. We see Kratos get transported, seeing visions of Fey only for a moment, but then Atreus pulls him out of the light and it's revealed to have been much longer; or perhaps it starts when we spread Fey's ashes, or when Atreus shatters the mask. Or maybe at the end of Ragnarok, when Kratos finds a semblance of peace.

I mean if this is the afterlife of God's and Godly beings... Sekhmet is dead. That implies either she or others of her Pantheon perished somehow. Perhaps the Kratos/Atreus games may touch on it or this game will.
It looked every bit GOW while not having Kratos as the front runner. If the story and random dialogue plus cast can fill the gap then its a solid win. The combat already looked stellar imo.

In some versions of Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is the guardian of Ra's sun chariot, and gets so aggressive that she becomes a threat to anyone that approaches, even ones allowed by Ra, so he drowns her in a flood of blood. Some versions have her die, others have her gorge herself drinking the blood until she transforms into the cow goddess Hathor. Then Bast or Bastet takes her place. (same goddess, just two versions of her name.) So this might just be that. Her and Osiris are the only Egyptian gods with any kind of actual death on record already.

The cube calls the place "The afterlife of the gods", so im assuming the game will see many different mythologies mesh into one title.
The big red fire hair guy for example is the Mongolian god of war "Begste", and the green lady with him was Sekhmet from Egyptian mythos, their goddess of war and healing
There's also a good chance that the big telescope is teasing another god; First thing to come to mind for me is Urania, the goddess of Astrology in Greek mythos who was mentioned in the original GOW trilogy, and we can assume she died in the collapse of Olympus

I think the sword is supposed to be excalibur, so the cube could be the lake that the lady of the lake kept the sword in. The name "Frank" seems unconnected, since AFAIK common claims to the location of the famed lake are that it's in north wales or Dozmary Pool in cornwall (according to the complicated process of trying to tie myths to specific geography, and there may be a claim by the Franks (germanic) to that lake, making the name a play on words, though I'm not aware of one.)
